We all have plans. Some of us want to become successful designers, businessmen, actors, musicians, politicians, journalists, bloggers, the list can go on and on, and in light of this, we’re always looking for the best allocation of our time. This isn’t another boring blog post on how important it is to use your time wisely, we all know that already. Rather, it’s a step further than that, and is an exploration of efficiency and focus in a dilemma that I personally have right now: one project, or multiple?
Right now, this question to me is a complete enigma. As a one-man band, you only have a limit in terms of the time, effort, and focus you can put on something. Divide those key resources up for multiple projects, and you’re looking at limited success across the board. Focus on one, and you build up one asset with a risk of it not working out so well. People always tell you to not put all your eggs in one basket, but in terms of web projects, isn’t that necessary for success? Shouldn’t you be living and breathing a single project?
I guess the best answer for people is to focus on one project, grow it to an appropriate size and then add scaling features to it. Let’s say you run a small service based business online where you need to do a certain level of work for the revenue of each project. Once you’ve reached a good level of projects, scale the service by employing people to do the work. Try and make the business as automated as possible, basically. Once you’ve done that to some extent, then you can start diverting attention away somewhat for other ventures.
So, now that I’m done with my personal rant, what do you think? What’s your opinion on time management and doing multiple projects? Comment below and tell me.
